SLOT CAVITY

A method for accessing a subterranean zone from the surface includes drilling a substantially vertical well bore from the surface to the subterranean zone and forming a slot cavity in the substantially vertical well bore proximate to the subterranean zone. The slot cavity comprises a substantially non-cylindrical shape. The method also includes drilling an articulated well bore from the surface to the subterranean zone. The articulated well bore is horizontally offset from the substantially vertical well bore at the surface and intersects the substantially vertical well bore at a junction proximate to the subterranean zone. The method may include drilling the articulated well bore to intersect the slot cavity of the substantially vertical well bore and drilling a substantially horizontal drainage pattern from the slot cavity into the subterranean zone. The subterranean zone may comprise a coal seam.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR MULTIPLE WELLS FROM A COMMON SURFACE LOCATION

A system for accessing a subterranean zone from an entry well including an entry well extending from the surface. The entry well has a substantially vertical portion. A one or more drainage wells extend from the entry well to a subterranean zone. A one or more articulated wells extend from the entry well to the subterranean zone. At least one of the articulated wells intersects at least one of the one or more drainage wells at a junction proximate the subterranean zone. A drainage pattern is formed coupled to the junction and operable to conduct fluids from the subterranean zone to the junction.

A well system includes at least two well bores extending from a surface to a subterranean zone. Each of the two well bores is used to form a well bore pattern for the subterranean zone that intersects the other well bore and transports fluid from the subterranean zone to the other well bore for production to the surface. In addition, each of the two well bores is operable to collect fluids transported to the well bore by the well bore pattern formed through the other well bore for production to the surface.

The system also includes an articulated well bore extending from the surface to the target zone. The system further includes a well bore pattern extending from the intersection of the first well bore and the articulated well bore in the target zone to provide access to the target zone.

 A drainage system for accessing multiple subterranean zones from the surface includes an entry well extending from the surface. The system also includes two or more exterior drainage wells extending from the entry well through the subterranean zones. The exterior drainage wells each extend outwardly and downwardly from the entry well for a first selected distance and then extend downwardly in a substantially vertical orientation for a second selected distance.

A method for removing fluid from a subterranean zone includes drilling a well bore from a surface to the subterranean zone and forming an enlarged cavity in the well bore such that the enlarged cavity acts as a chamber to separate liquid from gas flowing from the subterranean zone through the well bore. The method includes positioning a pump inlet within the enlarged cavity and operating a pumping unit to produce the liquid through the pump inlet. The well bore may comprise an articulated well bore.

METHOD OF DRILLING LATERAL WELLBORES FROM A SLANT WELL WITHOUT UTILIZING A WHIPSTOCK
[Dual String Drilling Without Whipstock]

In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a method for drilling a lateral wellbore from a slanted well includes drilling the slant well below the surface of the earth such that the slant well is angled toward a first horizontal direction that coincides with a desired drilling direction for the lateral wellbore. The slant well has a borehole wall that includes a high side portion closest to the surface, a low side portion farthest from the surface, and two side portions between the high side portion and the low side portion. The method further includes disposing a casing string in the slant well, disposing a drill string having a bent sub, a mud motor, and a drill bit coupled at a lower end thereof in the casing string, and positioning the drill bit adjacent either one of the side portions of the low side portion. The method further includes drilling, from either the side portion of the low side portion, an intermediate wellbore with the drill bit, and drilling, from the intermediate wellbore, the lateral wellbore in the desired drilling direction.

The exterior drainage wells each extend out outwardly and downwardly from the entry well for a first distance and then extend downwardly for the second distance. Each exterior drainage well passes through a plurality of the subterranean zones and is operable to drain fluid from the plurality of the subterranean zones.

A system for enhanced access to subterranean zone from the surface includes a well bore pattern having a first well bore extending from a surface well bore substantially defining a first end of the area in the subterranean zone to a distant end of the area. The pattern also includes a plurality of lateral well bores extending outwardly from the first well bore. The distance from an end of a lateral well bore to the surface well bore may be configured to be substantially equal for each of the lateral well bores to facilitate forming the lateral well bores. The system and method may also include nesting two or more well bore patterns within the subterranean zone to provide uniform coverage of the zone. Additionally, the system and method may include multiple well bore patterns in communication with a common surface well bore to reduce the surface area required for accessing the subterranean zone.

METHOD FOR PRODUCTION OF GAS FROM A COAL SEAM USING INTERSECTING WELL BORES

A method for removing water and producing methane from a subterranean coal seam. The method includes drilling a first substantially vertical well bore to the depth of the target coal seam, enlarging the bore of the vertical well at the depth of a target coal seam to provide an enlarged cavity, drilling an offset well intersecting the cavity substantially horizontally and then drilling through the cavity in order to drill substantially horizontal drainage well bores in the coal seam. The method may be used as a pre-mining step in conjunction with subterranean mining of the coal seam in order to remove methane and other dangerous gases and excess water from the coal seam in advance of mining operations.
